10/1: 5th grade groups have read Mystery at Camp White Cloud. The focus of that reading adventure was to identify the main problem of the story and various solutions that would work best. Next, both groups tackle opinion and argument essays based on a non fiction text.
11/30: 5th grade is working on a variety of short stories, with an emphasis on text evidence and expanding our answers to give more than just the bare facts. We are also following the classroom book Words Thier Way and an interactive computer program with a focus on phonics, vocabulary and reading comprehension.
12/21: The focus continues to be phonics in December, with a variety of short stories and skills for comprehension.
1/27/2016: With a New Year comes some new changes! we are now working on Social Studies topics that are being taught within the larger classroom setting. We focus on vocabulary and concepts, as well as reading and working on miscued words within the setting of the content area book we are reading. Currently, the topic is The American Revolution!
2/9/16: The American Revolution is alive and well in 5th grade! We are ahead of the class, which gives us a chance to go back and review the wide variety of topics about this time in our history.
3/21/2016: We are almost done with the Revolutionary war. We found some awesome videos about this historic period to make our learning very fun!
5/10/16: Westward Ho! is the next topic we are reviewing. This includes pioneers, covered wagons and Daniel Boone.
6/22: We ended our westward expansion studies and finished some assessments.
